Speed Up Multi-Core Network Rendering
So you got yourself a new computer with a Quad-Core or even a Dual Quad-Core processor, and you think that Vue can use all that power to speed up (network) rendering? Well.....yes and no!
Yes Vue can use all the cores, but No not all rendering processes do use them. Some processes can not be multithreaded and only one core per CPU will be used for the calculation. Reducing the speed to 2/8 on a Dual Quad-Core machine.
Radiosity, for instance, needs to be calculated before actual rendering starts and there are quite a few other processes that also won’t utilise all the cores!
So what to do to improve this!
First install a free program called Menumeter (Mac only) or something similar on Windows which shows you the activity of each core independently on your machine. If you notice that only one or two cores are used at full speed it’s time to take measures.
The trick is to start multiple copies of Rendercow, each with a different Port Number. So simply duplicate the folder with the Rendercow app and start the Rendercow and change the Port Number to something else then the standard 5002, i.e. 5003, 5004, 5005, etc.
If you add these extra Rendercows to the HyperVue cue don’t forget to specify the different Port Number or HyperVue will not be able to find them.
Finally thanks to Frédéric Louguet for this tip!
Happy Rendering!
